Juxt and Igers Seattle has a really cool project with the University of Washington Athletics Department. Our local mobile photographers are granted access to behind the scenes of UW’s athletic games and starting with its largest athletic program – Husky football.
We look forward to this partnership and will ask local mobile shooters to join us in these events when the space arises. The marriage between photography and social media is a great one. This is an opportunity to show the work of local mobile photographers covering amazing and awesome events.
Big thanks to Daniel Hour , Director for New Media & Recruiting Services, University of Washington Athletics. He has been a great advocate for the work of local mobile device photographers through Instagram and other social networks. It is great to have him as a resource and a partner with this project. BIG Thanks D and to your staff as well.
Also Big Thanks to Rachel, Bridgette, @thatonedood, and Darvin for covering the UW vs Stanford game. AND for the HUSKY nation…GO DAWGS!
After this win, the Dawgs are ranked in the top #25! Congrats UW!

BIG PLAYS FROM SANKEY, WILLIAMS KEY UPSET OF STANFORD (and photos) by @thatonedood
On a night where the whole nation would be watching for his trademark megawatt smile, Keith Price was serious on the sidelines. Where both the Husky and Cardinal defenses would trade shots like heavyweight boxers, Price would return to the sidelines after each offensive series, imploring teammates to keep their heads up, that a big play was out there to be made, and that their time on offense would come.
Sure enough, big plays came for the Husky offense at the most opportune times. Bishop Sankey capped a 144-yard rushing performance with a 61-yard touchdown sprint on a crucial fourth-and-1 to close the Cardinal lead to 13-10 at the end of the third quarter. Then, late in the fourth quarter facing a third-and-2 from the Stanford 35, WR Kasen Williams took a screen pass from Price down the sideline for the go-ahead touchdown. CB Desmond Trufant would later seal the victory, picking off a desperation heave down the sideline from Stanford QB Josh Nunes with less than 2 minutes remaining, giving the Huskies a 17-13 victory over the 8th ranked Cardinal.

The Cardinal defense came in as a heralded unit, having contained Heisman Trophy candidate Matt Barkley and the USC offense to two touchdowns the week before. However, the Husky defense came out determined to not let Cardinal RB Stepfan Taylor beat them. They were up for the task, holding Taylor to only 75 yards rushing on 21 carries after Taylor exploded for over 200 all-purpose yards. This forced the Cardinal to rely on the arm of Nunes, who has struggled in moving the ball downfield in his first year as Andrew Luck’s successor. Accordingly, Nunes missed several throws downfield, including his late misfire that was intercepted by Trufant.
The Husky defense showed a nationally televised audience that perhaps their lackluster performance against LSU was an anomaly. The Huskies held Stanford to 2 field goals in the first half, after being dominated by the Stanford rushing attack the past 2 meetings. With new defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox and defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi at the helm, the Huskies were physical, jamming receivers off the line of scrimmage and swarming the ball at every occasion. Stanford was rarely able to break out and make big plays. In fact, the Huskies held Stanford without an offensive touchdown, with their only end zone score coming from an interception return in the third quarter.

The Huskies now turn their attention to an even more daunting task: traveling to Autzen to face the 2nd ranked Oregon Ducks in one of the toughest environments in the nation for road teams to play. The Ducks are known as one of the fastest (if not THE fastest) teams in the nation, with incredible athletes at nearly every position. It will be crucial for the Huskies to strengthen their recipe for victory against Stanford and be even more physical on defense against the Ducks. They will need to maintain the defensive intensity for the entire game, as the Ducks’ offense has been likened to a fast-breaking basketball offense that does not rest for long between plays.
Nonetheless, the Thursday night lights shined brightly on the all black uniforms of the Huskies. Price’s resolve and leadership proved to be key. The offense struggled for most of the night, but the offensive unit stayed with the objective of being physical and waiting for the right opportunity to bust a big play.

After the Price took a knee to run the clock out in the 4th quarter, the Dawg Pack stormed the field out of the south end zone stands. Price removed his helmet and finally flashed his toothy smile. The Huskies are now 3-1 (1-0 in the Pac-12) and back in the national rankings this week (#23 in the AP Top 25). As the offensive and defensive units start to realize their potential, Husky fans, too, have a reason to smile as big as Price.
Shooter Testimonial (and photos) from Rachel S.
Of course I was thrilled to be shooting a Husky game…one the field…with a press pass. Who wouldn’t be? Even if you don’t follow sports, it’s an honor and an adventure to be documenting these moments for an organization like UW Athletics. What I didn’t realize about the opportunity, was how I would be affected by the people, the sights, the sounds… the whole experience itself.

See… I was accepted to UW back in the day, but I didn’t end up attending for a number of reasons. As years passed and I earned degrees from other great institutions, I always harbored deep regret. Regret not for lack of a great education, but for that college life, that UW experience. I never lived on campus, never knew what it felt like to walk from my dorm to that enormous stadium with crowds of rabid Husky fans chanting in the streets. I never donned my school colors for tailgating or screamed until my voice disappeared, for MY TEAM to win. I never knew the satisfaction of talking smack to the other team alongside a couple thousand of my fellow students, and I never experienced the deafening roar of the crown when our team emerged victorious from that final huddle. Until now.

In no way did I anticipate my reactions as we made or way into the stadium; I was completely geeking out! I felt like a kid, like that awestruck kid at her first Husky game; on the inside I WAS one of those kids cheering in the stands and moving in unison when the band played a fight song. (on the outside, totally pro of course) The feeling of pride and anticipation was so infectious… it was absolutely irresistible!

The experience of being on the field with that magical white Press Vest, well having that kind of access really was out of this world. I was pretty flustered at first, and I got nervous. I hadn’t ever shot in this type of situation, and I lost my confidence for a moment. I considered shooting with the native camera, but anyone who knows me knows my heart belongs to Hipstamatic, so once I pulled myself together and found my groove, everything just flowed. Of course Hipstas are the shots I chose as my favorites for this recap.

One thing I have to say is: MAD PROPS to the awesome folks at Photojojo.com; my 3x Zoom lens for iPhone was invaluable for shooting in this situation. And no, they are in no way paying me to say this.

There aren’t many chances to get up close to the action at one of these games, so having that zoom lens really gave me an edge. That little lens also made me feel like a celebrity on the sidelines. I had anxiously anticipated being met with disdain by the traditional photogs down there. It turned out to be the opposite experience; several of them stopped me to ask what I was using on my iPhone and exclaimed that they hadn’t ever seen anything like it. Total win!! I also got sidetracked by the Cheer Squad when they wanted me to show them my gear, and they were super stoked to learn I was shooting for UW Athletics. It was such a great feeling! I was honored to have that small part in bringing mobile photography into the mainstream of sports photojournalism, changing my lenses alongside the big guns… ha!

I think the images with the 3x Zoom turned out pretty amazing. No, they aren’t crystal clear. When I look at them though, I prefer them with their imperfections. So much of football is about movement and urgency; I think my photos from that night really bring those feelings home.

I wish I knew a little more about the rules and strategy of the game, but what I really learned from this experience is that you don’t have to understand football to make beautiful pictures of the experience, that my mobile phone can hang with the pros, and that like everyone else… you gotta hold on for dear life when the crowd storms the field…

Thank you to Daniel Hour, UW Athletics and Juxt for this amazing opportunity and experience! I hope we made you proud.
