UW Men’s BBall Recap

So we are reaching our 2nd installment of the last few games for the University of Washington Men’s Basketball program.  Since our last post we have had the pleasure of community mobile shooters:  Rjae (vs Colorado State), RJD and Shauna (vs St. Louis), and Erin and Dave (vs Cal State Fullerton) providing their shooting skills in documenting the game.

Also Juxt is proud to be a part of the GoHuskies.com crew, providing community insights and photography for one of the most respected universities in the PAC-12 and the NCAA. Big thanks to UW Athletics and Daniel Hour.

Let’s recap these last few games with some text and in true Juxt style – great photographs from our smart phones!

This takes the experience of watching a UW Mens Basketball game to the next level. I have been a ticket holder in years past but watching from the top.  Being on sidelines I felt part of the action as I could hear every shot, foul, ref, and dialogue on the court. I was glued to the action more than ever because the experience on the floor is just amplified.

It’s tricky shooting a basketball game with the Iphone. You will get a lot of fast moving pics and untimed shots. However my pics in the 2nd half turned out better!!! It was a great experience. – Dave Nguyen

Press pass around my neck. iPhone charged. Backup iPhone charged and rigged with a Photojojo fisheye lens. The pocket of my jacket works as my camera bag for the night. No one questions me as I quickly set to snapping the team warm-ups as the official mobile photographer for GoHuskies.com. One bad MoPho I like to think of myself. LOL. I actually just feel super lucky to be there and still can’t believe that no one stops me and asks why I am all over the place with two phones. Ron, the usher seems slightly befuddled about my presence and I can tell he wonders about my credentials. I explain that I am shooting for the UW Men’s Basketball Instagram feed and he is still befuddled. All the young kids do it. (I am not a young kid, I have three young kids.) I show him some of my fisheye shots and he seems impressed. I tell him that his phone may be able to take pictures, but my camera can take calls. Good luck he tells me as he points to where I should sit under the basket – not on the cheerleaders’ side. The game begins. From underneath the basket – I’ve never sat on the court before – the players are HUGE. And FAST. I had visions of posting as the action unfolded. As fast as the last Husky break, that idea flew down the court. I decided to just keep snapping and edit/post later. I set one camera to Hipstamatic Jane lens + Claunch72 Monochrome. I like Jane’s simple clarity and Claunch72 is my go-to Black and White hipstafilm – such good tones. The second phone I used the fisheye lens with VSCO Cam app.  I knew I wasn’t going to be able to compete with the big sports photogs and their specialty gear. If I could get a different asthetic with the Hipstamatic or the fisheye, I might provide some value added perspective and be worthy of the pass still around my neck. To be honest, I don’t pay much attention to the game. I am focused on finagling a money shot. Steadying my phone against the floor to help with blur and try to catch the reflection in the gleaming hardwoods. Until the end, when I turn my attention more to the crowd who is really getting excited as the Huskies rally back and bring it down to a 2-point game. Huskies win 74-72. It was truly win-win. I won having had the experience. Go Huskies! Thank you Juxt.Erin McMillen Gustafson
